El Cheapo is the world’s largest sheepshead fishing tournament. This year fishing kayaks were allowed to participate too. Kayak anglers were competing against the anglers in boats, and there were special prizes for Kayak Division winner.

NuCanoe angler and Team NuCanoe member Arun Ramalingam won the kayak fishing division with my 8.8 pound sheepshead and placed 17th overall among 558 boats! Arun fished out of his NuCanoe Classic 10.

At first light, Arun caught three 4 pounders back in the creeks. The wind started to pickup, so he left there to try some bridge pilings that he knew were only a short paddle away as the wind blowing furiously. He threw his anchor at the bottom of a piling and got it hooked. After knocking off barnacles off with a machete, Arun started fishing with whole clams where the chum would be in the current. He lost a couple of bites and then hooked on this 8.8lb monster. With a quick tug of war, Arun netted him.

Satisfied with his trophy catch, Arun called it a day as he didn’t want to battle the wind anymore. He was really living on the edge out there, but came home a winner thanks to the very stable NuCanoe!
